Keynote
Dr. Michael W. Higgins, PhD, D.H.L, LL.D.
What happened to Canadian Catholicism?
Canadian Catholicism has had a bumpy ride over the past four decades. From the the Winnipeg Statement on Humanae vitae, to the CCCB 1983 statement on the economy, Ethical Reflections on the Economic Crisis, to 1988 and the horrific revelations of repeated sexual abuse at Mt. Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland, followed by news of cover ups and a bishop going to jail in 2009; we have seen the highs and lows of the church’s witness on our national stage.
In this presentation, Dr. Michael W Higgins will bring his extensive knowledge of Church history and the Canadian context into focus as we seek to respond to the call of Pope Francis in what may be the most promising opportunity for lay engagement in the life of the Church since the Second Vatican Council.
Michael W. Higgins, a native Torontonian, is an author, scholar, Vatican Affairs Specialist for The Globe and Mail, Papal Commentator for the CTV Network, educator, CBC Radio documentarian, columnist, and former senior academic administrator.
