She spent 26 years working in various roles within the Correctional System; retiring in 2018 from her position as Deputy Superintendent in a provincial correctional facility. Andrea has taught at Niagara College and continues to teach online through Conestoga College. Andrea has a Master of Social Work and she is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers. She currently practices within the provinces of Ontario and Newfoundland. Andrea has always had an interest in the intersection of mental health and the law. Within her private practice many of her clients are men who have issues of a sexual nature, some of whom have been criminally charged with sexually harming others and some who have concerns about their sexual interests. She also works with people who have experienced trauma of all kinds, helping them to restore a sense of safety, process their experiences and rebuild their lives. Andrea is actively involved in preventative work, providing community consultation, education and training on areas such as sexual offending, child sexual exploitation material, restorative justice and trauma. Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland, followed by news of cover ups and a bishop going to jail in 2009; we have seen the highs and lows of the church’s witness on our national stage. In this presentation, Dr. Michael W Higgins will bring his extensive knowledge of Church history and the Canadian context into focus as we seek to respond to the call of Pope Francis in what may be the most promising opportunity for lay engagement in the life of the Church since the Second Vatican Council. Michael W. Higgins, a native Torontonian, is an author, scholar, Vatican Affairs Specialist for The Globe and Mail, Papal Commentator for the CTV Network, educator, CBC Radio documentarian, columnist, and former senior academic administrator. We wanted an opportunity to share with others how the crisis was affecting us, our faith, our families and our friendships. We also wanted to educate ourselves as to what is happening by way of response in the wider church and the diocese of Hamilton. We had heard that St. Clement parish in Cambridge had held a “parish conversation” to talk about the issue and it was well-attended and well-received. Our recommendation to the bishop was to do some pilot testing of the parish conversation model, ideally in three parishes. With a few parishes, we felt we could obtain a good ‘reading’ of the ordinary people in the pews, allowing us to: assess levels of interest identify types of questions and information people need ensure adequacy of safety planning in the meetings As expert resources, we asked Father Charlie Jordan, Bishop’s delegate for child sexual abuse allegations, and Rocco Gizzarelli, Executive Director of the Catholic Children’s Aid Society who has knowledge of trauma-informed practice, to assist us in designing and conducting the meetings. With gratitude and hope, we are reaffirmed in our commitment as Catholic faithful to respond to the call for healing, reconciliation, and transformation.
